Courtyard view: interior of a cluster

How is Grow your Home being built?

Farm uses only materials with lowest carbon footprint. It means to use local resources and local labour. Traditional construction techniques are sustainable and well-known to local inhabitans. Grow your Home combines ecological and social sustainability reinforcing the stamina of local communities.

Vertical and horizontal structure is a prefabricated construction system: bamboo columns and beams create 3D grid of 3 meters module. House is erected very quickly with this technology. Once roof is finished, non-structural walls are added to delimit the interior space. Old technique of woven bamboo is used here. Walls can be optionally coverd with earth. This light weight system called wattle & daub provides good insulation against hot climate of New Delhi.

Layout of a cluster: simple grid logic makes it easy for future incremental additions
Which infrastructure?

To maintain high level of independence, the farm has its own wastewater treatment and irrigation system. Organic waste is stored in composting chambres. 1 chambre serves every 2 houses. Its product - a compost is then used as soil conditioner for the farm. Liquid part is constantly drained off to recycling center. There it is treated inside horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland. Recycling center also process solid waste (plastic, paper and glass) of wider neighborhood. It brings job opportunities and converts waste into resource.

Rainwater is stored inside reservoirs which are located in every cluster. Later it is pumped into water tanks above roof level so that it can be used for irrigation during dry season between monsoons. Energy for water pumps as well as for other electric and electronic devices is produced by wind turbines installed above water tanks. Such Power Towers (composed of water tanks and wind turbines) are located in every sector. Sector itself can be thus considered as an independent unit. Power Towers as well as Recycling Center are complex assemblies and as such they require expert design and construction supervision.

Why all this?

Scope of Advanced Slum Concept is to investigate how such a problem of informal settlements can be mitigated or even turned into opportunity for better life. In our opinion it can be reached through involvment of all stakeholders - citizens, architects and city authorities.
